WHAT WE DO
Preserve Rhode Island is the only statewide non-profit working to protect historic places through advocacy, stewardship, and preservation programs. Our mission is to protect Rhode Island's historic and unique places for present and future generations.
From one end of the state to the other, historic buildings and unique places shape the distinct character of the cities and towns of Rhode Island. They connect us to a heritage that has been evolving for almost four centuries.
From our base in a 18th-Century farm house in Providence, we work statewide with local groups on preservation challenges large and small. Preservation is not just “saving” old buildings and defending open spaces.
Finding productive, economic uses for vacant, old buildings
Offering guidance and providing support to local groups defending threatened places
Advocating for legislation-including historic tax credits–that revitalizes historic buildings and our economy
Demonstrating best practices as we care for our historic buildings
Making downtowns, neighborhoods and countrysides better for the people who live and work there
Engaging the community at our Lippitt House Museum to connect visitors to Rhode Island's rich history
