As the statewide advocate for Rhode Island’s historic places, Preserve RI works closely with the legislature on various issues. To strengthen our connections with Smith Hill and showcase the power of preservation, we invited legislators to Preserve RI’s Lippitt House Museum on January 27th.
For some this was their first time at the Museum. Not only did they learn about the building’s rich history, but we could bring them up to date on Preserve RI’s mission and programs, including our advocacy for improving the state’s Historic Tax Credit program.
Approximately 20% of all new housing between 2013 and 2023 came from Historic Tax Credit projects. By repurposing underutilized buildings into much-needed housing and commercial space, the Historic Tax Credit Program has been one of the most powerful drivers of the state’s economy. Unfortunately, a lack of funding and burdensome constraints have hindered the program. Although some improvements were made to the tax credit program last year, we continue to advocate for significant funding and additional reforms to ensure that this vital program can be competitive with programs in neighboring states.
