The Federal Historic Preservation Fund, which is responsible for funding State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPO’s), is at risk. Despite having funding already allocated for the fiscal year, funds have not been released to SHPO’s across the nation, including the Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission. Without funding, historic properties across the state will be left at risk with budget cuts potentially affecting vital functions.

Impacts to these programs are anticipated if the federal funding is not released:

1.    Tax Credits including both the state and federal programs

2.    Grants which help provide vital funding for historic places across the state

3.    National Register of Historic Places nominations that both help us tell the story about our state’s history and also allow historic properties access to funding opportunities

4.    Archaeological efforts to protect and learn from buried and underwater resources of indigenous peoples and those that came after

Ask your Congressional delegates to pressure the Office of Management and Budget to release funding from the Historic Preservation Fund! Click here to find the number to reach your local representative, or click the button below to send written letters to your Congressional delegates.
