This cross-counties adventure is the perfect way to enjoy a fall day in Rhode Island with family and friends. Visiting spaces, places, and people that are being honored for their preservation efforts makes for a unique outing. Meet preservation heroes and see the best in recent historic preservation across the state.

Twelve locations are included in our inaugural tour including farm spaces, a majestic theater, a spectacularly preserved diner, and more. Buy your tickets today and start plotting which places you’ll visit.

LANPHEAR LIVERY, WATCH HILL

This former stable now houses a community center, gallery and shops—all with a spectacular view of the harbor. The brainchild of Rich Youngken, a 2021 honoree, is now a vital hub to the community.

HALE HOUSE, MATUNUCK

This late Victorian house overlooking pristine Wash Pond was meticulously restored thanks to Ken Woodcock, honoree of the Antoinette Downing Award for volunteer service. At one point Hale House was a hotel for visiting summer-stock actors including Tallulah Bankhead and Marlon Brando. Added bonus: stop across the road at the South Kingstown Land Trust (another project supported by Ken) to tour the grounds.

SAMUEL CLARKE FARM, RICHMOND

On a quiet country road in a hidden corner of the state sits this historic house (c. 1691) on 40 acres of farmland. Stroll back in time on the walking paths while admiring the six 18th and 19th century outbuildings.

HOPKINS HOLLOW CHURCH, COVENTRY

Tucked inside the village of Greene is this sweet little country church. Thoughtfully restored by the family’s descendants, an intrepid pair of sisters who saved this oasis from ruin, the church is a 2020 Awardee.

PONTIAC MILLS, WARWICK

This former textile factory along the Pawtuxet River once manufactured Fruit of the Loom underwear before being abandoned and falling into disrepair. Now it is a vibrant community of shops, offices and residences. Enjoy a complimentary beer at Apponaug Brewery while taking in the river view.

PROVIDENCE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, PROVIDENCE

This glorious landmark in downtown Providence recently had its terra cotta tile façade restored in a painstaking, multi-million dollar renovation. Learn how they returned this beloved icon to its original glory.

“WEDDING CAKE” HOUSE, PROVIDENCE

Affectionately known for its ornate wooden exterior, this iconic home was in danger of demolition by neglect. To the rescue: two unflappable women with a vision. See the transformation from eyesore into a residence for artists.

KNIGHT MEMORIAL LIBRARY, PROVIDENCE

A masterpiece of design, the Elmwood branch is the crown jewel of the Providence Community Library collection. Learn more about their restoration efforts and community outreach.

MISS LORRAINE DINER, PAWTUCKET

Be transported back to the 1950s while enjoying lunch in what was considered the “Cadillac” of diners—the Worcester Lunch Car. Found abandoned in Connecticut, this passion project won a Rhody Award in 2020.

PROSPECT HEIGHTS, PAWTUCKET

In 1940, Rhode Island’s first public housing project was the enviable future for many…with electricity, running water, and lots of green space. Recently restored, it is still as desirable today, providing community programs, activities and support for those who need it most.

HEARTHSIDE HOUSE MUSEUM, LINCOLN

Literally built out of love (unfortunately unrequited) this historic home is the centerpiece of The Great Road Heritage Campus restored and maintained by the Friends of Hearthside, a 2021 honoree. Learn about the home and tour the campus' schoolhouse next door.

GLEN FARM MILLHOUSE, PORTSMOUTH

Winner of this year’s Homeowner Award, this newlywed couple envisioned their dream home in a collapsing mill building that was part of Glen Farm, a sprawling gentleman’s farm owned by wealthy New York socialite H.A.C. Taylor. See the house that (requited) love built.
