Annual Events

Home for the Holidays! 2010

Held on a Saturday before Thanksgiving. Date to be announced.

Start your holiday season with a memorable visit to a special place in Rhode Island.  Visit a variety of historic sites to enjoy special holiday décor and exhibits unique to each site.   Special "admission" to each site will be non-perishable food donations that will go to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank to help families this holiday season.  View the 2008 event poster that was printed courtesy of The Signature Group in East Providence. Threshods: Step Inside History 2012

Held on Sunday of Mother's Day weekend

This free statewide open house brings many historic sites together for one highly marketed event! In the past two years we have had 24-26 sites participant in this great one-day event! We expect more historic sites will join us each year and help spread the word about their own special site, as well as those sites in their neighboring communities. Annual Workshop

Presented as a session at the RI Statewide Historic Preservation Conference

Held on a Saturday in April

The HSCRI annual workshop is now a session at the RI Statewide Historic Preservation Conference, an annual conference presented by the RI Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission.  The 2009 session featured successful collaborations between cultural institutions. The session discussed a collaboration in Maine, in which five organizations participate in the Portland History Docent Program to train volunteer interpreters.  As discussion was an example on Nantucket where two museums share a full-time curator, and in South County where eight institutions formed the Culture Coalition to coordinate special events.

For more information on this workshop or future workshops please contact Susanna Prull at 401-272/5101 or by email.

Communication

HSCRI Listserv

To encourage communication between HSCRI members, PRI created a email-based listserv where members can email the entire HSCRI to ask questions, make comments, or post notices about events or activities happening at their historic sites.  The listserv is intented to help the HSCRI engage in quick, easy "conversations" about their questions, thoughts, resources, and activities.  The listserv also gives Preserve Rhode Island an opportunity to keep members up-to-date on HSCRI activities.  If your organization is interested in joining the HSCRI listserv please email Susanna Prull or call 272-5101.

First HSCRI Workshop

Connect, Provoke, and Inspire...Enhance visitor experience and capture your fair share of the tour market

This workshop was held March 27, 2008 at the RI Department of Economic Development & Department of Tourism.  Thirty HSCRI members joined together to discuss how we can enhance visitor experience, as well as investigate who our visitors are, as we prepared for the "tourist season."

One of the priorities of the HSCRI is to provide opportunities for leaders of historic sites to discuss common challenges affecting future success. Understanding how we present our properties and to what audience is just a start. The workshop was developed to inspire the historic sites to examine their visitors' experience and think about how they could have them coming back for more!
